1800s Artist Lay Figure Mannequin Articulated

A Rare 19th-Century French Articulated Artist’s Lay Figure

This lifesize articulated mannequin, dating back to the 1800s, is a true treasure from the past, once used by artists and painters to perfect their craft. Designed with a skeletal wooden structure, she is covered in her original fabric, which has been carefully filled with horsehair to create a realistic body shape.

Her beautifully hand-painted papier-mâché head exudes an almost serene expression, and despite its age, it remains remarkably well-preserved. The articulated hands are fully functional,  her movable hinged joints still allow her to be posed in a variety of lifelike positions.

She is currently displayed in a sitting position,  as seen in the images, she sits naturally, adding to her versatility and timeless elegance. These antique artist’s mannequins have become exceedingly rare, with few surviving examples remaining today.

A true piece of artistic history, she continues to captivate with her delicate craftsmanship and hauntingly beautiful presence.
