Dark Gold 1920s Flapper Wig Metal Thread
Description
An exquisite and highly sculptural 1920s flapper wig, masterfully crafted from metallic thread in a luxurious antique gold tone. The wig is styled in a sleek, close-fitting bob—an iconic silhouette of the Jazz Age—but with an extraordinary level of theatrical detail.
A thick braided band frames the forehead like a diadem, while perfectly coiled curls sit elegantly at the sides, catching the light with every movement. The surface of the wig glimmers subtly, imitating glossy, marcel-waved hair under stage lighting. The construction is entirely hand-made, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and a deep understanding of both fashion and performance aesthetics.
This is not simply a prop—this is haute couture for the stage. Worn most likely by a cabaret, revue, Folies Bergère, or music-hall performer, it was designed to dazzle the audience and transform the wearer into a living sculpture of modern glamour. Surviving examples of this quality are exceedingly rare.

History – The Golden Age of Theatrical Flapper Wigs
In the 1920s, the world changed—and so did hair. The short bob became the symbol of freedom, modernity, and rebellion. But on stage, natural hair was not always practical. Dancers needed movement, shine, durability, and uniform glamour. This created a new art form: theatrical raffia and metallic wigs.
These wigs were:
-
Made from raffia, cellophane, or metallic threads
-
Lightweight, flexible, and sweat-resistant
-
Styled in marcel waves, finger curls, or braids
-
Designed to shimmer under electric stage lights
-
Custom-tailored in Parisian and European costume ateliers
They became a signature feature of the great revues and cabarets—Folies Bergère, Moulin Rouge, Ziegfeld Follies, Casino de Paris. Many of the most famous stage stars wore them.
Unlike natural hair wigs, these were pure fantasy. They turned the performer into a sculpture of light and movement—part fashion, part illusion.
Today, original 1920s theatrical wigs are almost impossible to find, especially in such superb condition. This example is a breathtaking survivor of the golden age of performance, glamour, and modern womanhood.
