Rare Ballets Russes Headdress & Bracelets - Paris, c. 1915–1920

A Rare Antique 'Ballets Russes' Theater Set – In the Style of Léon Bakst

Period: c. 1915–1920
Provenance: Paris, France

An exceptionally rare and intriguing antique theater set from Paris, beautifully capturing the avant-garde aesthetic of Léon Bakst for the legendary Ballets Russes, dating to the circa 1915–1920 period. This unique ensemble consists of a monumental headdress and matching large bracelets.

The Headdress & Silverwork
The centerpiece is the dramatic headdress, executed in a bold, abstract form that leans gracefully towards the traditional Russian kokoshnik silhouette. The silver-plated metal is deliberately unpolished; its deep, authentic old patina lends the piece a striking, time-honored character. The silver surface is not solid but masterfully crafted with an intricate openwork pattern, closely resembling the delicate nature of silver filigree and ajour. This pierced design catches the stage light beautifully, creating a mesmerizing play between shadow and metal.

Color & Detailing
Both the headdress and the substantial matching bracelets feature distinctive, geometric shapes inlaid with vibrant colored figures, highly characteristic of the Oriental and Byzantine influences seen in early 20th-century modernism. Flanking the sides of the headdress are long, dramatic downward-hanging pendants. These cascading strands are beautifully set and decorated with antique beads in the exact matching colors of the main piece, adding motion and grandeur to the silhouette.

Provenance & Condition
Originating directly from Paris, where it was used on stage during the height of the Russian ballet craze, this historical costume set remains in its authentic, unaltered theatrical state. It is a museum-quality, highly decorative collector's item that perfectly embodies the artistic revolution of early 20th-century theater history.
