A stunning 1900s Mermaid Theater Headdress

A Mermaid’s Headdress, Circa 1900

A headdress worthy of a mermaid — an enchanting piece from a bygone era that transports you straight into the world of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

This fairytale creation was worn on stage in the French theatre around 1900. The long pearl strands evoke the hidden oysters of the deep sea, making this already exceptional piece even more magical. At the time, the underwater world was a popular theme for all kinds of productions — as you can see in the film linked here.

A truly rare item that has survived the passage of time remarkably well. The cap is crafted from silver bullion fabric laid over a sturdy base. The tall forms rising from the crown recall the shape of Neptune’s trident, while the front is adorned with sponge-like elements made of netted fabric, echoing sea creatures drifting beneath the waves.

This is one of the most magical fairytale headdresses in my collection — what do you think of it?
