1920s White Flapper Evening Wig

White Raffia Evening Wig, Circa 1920s

I have a passion for original antique wigs from the early 1920s — beautiful relics from a time when a quick hair transformation could turn any evening into a glamorous affair. Short bobs with elegant finger waves were all the rage back then, and these wigs were crafted from delicate materials like fine raffia, silver bullion thread, and silk. They offered the perfect solution for an instant new look or a discreet fix for a bad hair day, easily matching the outfit of the moment.

Very few of these fragile pieces have survived, and I am proud to say that I own one of the largest private collections of original 1920s wigs. Many examples you see today — whether in exhibitions, books, or online — likely trace back to my collection. A handful of museums worldwide also hold one or two of these rare gems.

This particular piece is a white raffia wig from the 1920s. The raffia strands are fine and delicately styled into a chic bob with soft waves, finished with two coiled buns at ear level — a look that might remind you of Princess Leia from Star Wars! The wavy pattern and signature side buns were fashionable and playful, just like the era itself.

The vintage photo of flapper women posing in similar wigs captures the fun and spirit of the Roaring Twenties perfectly — a charming glimpse into the carefree glamour of that time.
